Red Devils Take on Aurora

AURORA, Ill. – The Eureka men's and women's wrestling teams competed against Aurora on Wednesday afternoon.
On the women's side, Head Coach Eric Biehl noted, "We didn't come out aggressive enough. We let them control the pace, but we'll be more prepared next time." The women's team fell 42-1 on points, with Jaylah Dalton scoring the lone point for the Red Devils. Dalton ultimately lost by technical fall, 11-1.
On the men's side, the Red Devils secured two wins but lost 45-10 on points. Gaige Owens and Nathan Berta were the standout performers for Eureka. Owens avenged a previous loss in a rematch with Aurora's Jake Penzato in the 141-pound weight class. Owens won by major decision, 13-3, earning 4 points for Eureka.
At 149 pounds, Nathan Berta started his match strong, securing a win by fall in just 22 seconds to contribute 6 points to Eureka's score.
The Red Devils also took all three matches on the junior varsity side. While these matches didn't count toward the team score, they were a great way to end the day, with three freshmen picking up wins. Isaac Smith won by fall in 56 seconds at 133 pounds, Jeremiah Robertson won by fall in 2:28 at 157 pounds, and Isaac Coleman won by fall in 1:46 at 285 pounds.
"The scoreboard doesn't always tell the whole story," Biehl said after the dual. "We saw both highs and lows today."
