Volleyball Drops Match to Monmouth

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka volleyball team fell against Monmouth on Thursday evening, with set scores of 22-25, 23-25, 25-18, and 9-25.

The Red Devils started strong, leading most of the first set, but a 6-point scoring streak from the Scots turned the tide, allowing Monmouth to take the set 25-22. The second set looked very similar to the first, as Eureka maintained a lead until Monmouth surged ahead with a 9-1 run, ultimately finishing the set 25-23. 

Eureka found their footing in the third set, rallying from an early 6-2 deficit to win 25-18. However, the momentum didn't carry into the fourth set, where the Red Devils struggled, ultimately losing 25-9.

Alyssa Company (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln Community) led Eureka with 13 kills, 4 solo blocks, and 2 service aces. Halle Gauna (Arcola, Ill./Arcola) contributed 10 kills, while Claire Schaffner (Delavan, Ill./Delavan) recorded 15 assists, 10 digs, and 2 service aces. Brooklyn Shell (Evansville, Ind./Mount Vernon) led the team with 15 digs and added 5 kills.

The Red Devils will travel to Missouri on Saturday, Sep. 28 to face Fontbonne at 12 p.m. This matchup marks the second meeting of the season, with Fontbonne winning the first encounter in straight sets.
