Eureka Goes 1-1 to Kick Off SLIAC Play at Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Eureka volleyball team went 1-1 in its first two matches of St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

After dropping a 3-0 match against Lyon, the Red Devils came back and swept Principia to pick up their second win of the 2023 season.

Match 1: Lyon 3, Eureka 0

In the first matchup in program history between the two teams, Lyon came out on top, 25-14, 25-23, 25-16.

Eureka's Halle Gauna (Arcola, Ill./Arcola) recorded a team-high eight kills in the first match of the day while hitting a team-best .217. Payton Florine (Galesburg, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) and Alexis Charlton (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) each added five kills.

Setter Hope McGinnis (Mackinaw, Ill./Deer Creek-Mackinaw) registered 18 assists. Brooklyn Shell (Evansville, Ind./Mount Vernon) posted 12 digs.

Lyon hit very well during the first and third sets. During the second set, the Red Devils and the Fighting Scots were neck-and-neck, recording a .143 and .154 kill efficiency, respectively.

Eureka played the home team close, nearly forcing extra points, but Lyon held on and fell back into its flow in the third set to clinch the win.

Match 2: Eureka 3, Principia 0

Eureka held the upper hand in each of the three sets, peaking with a .375 hitting percentage and a 10-point victory in the second set. The final score was 25-19, 25-15, 25-20.

Shell and Gauna each notched eight kills to lead the Red Devils at the net, with Shell posting a team-high .538 hitting percentage and Gauna following at .429.

Florine was right there with seven kills, along with 12 digs to tie with Taven Miller (East Peoria, Ill../East Peoria) for a team-high. Shell and Florine also each had a pair of aces.

Madison Richards (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) hit .444 in the match and finished with four kills, as well as the team's lone solo block. McGinnis distributed a team-high 15 assists.
