Eureka Volleyball Falls at Fontbonne, 3-0

ST. LOUIS — The Eureka volleyball team couldn't seize the upper hand at Fontbonne on Saturday.

As a result, the Griffins picked up a 25-14, 25-14, 25-21 sweep over the Red Devils – and their first win of the season.

Junior middle hitter Corinne DeBoard (Centralia, Ill./Christ Our Rock Lutheran) notched a team-high eight kills for the visitors on a team-best .136 hitting percentage. Freshman Regan Reed (Flanagan, Ill./Flanagan-Cornell) hit .125 and had three kills, and freshman setter Faith Catour (Orion, Ill./Orion) posted 12 assists. Reed and Jordyn Fox (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) each had a pair of aces for the Red Devils.

Jadyn Fitzgerald had a big day on the other side of the net for the home team, posting a match-high 14 kills, while Hannah Gallagher hit a match-best .400 and tallied 12 kills.

The closest set of the afternoon was the third. The Red Devils were tied at 11 before Fontbonne ripped off a 6-0 run to take control. That wasn't the end, though.

Down 16-22, EC claimed four of the next five points, with a DeBoard kill making it 23-20. However, Fontbonne scored on a kill and an attack error to claim the set and the match.

The Red Devils scored the first three points of the match and kept the first set close up 9-11, but with the help of two aces and a strong serving run by Jessica Molden, Fontbonne scored six straight and cruised to 25-14.

EC fell behind in a hurry in Set 2, but scored seven out of nine points to make it respectable at 20-14. Fontbonne responded by scoring the last five points of the set – all on kills.

The Red Devils (0-4, 0-4) will next face Blackburn (2-1, 2-1) on Tuesday the road at 7 p.m.
