EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka women's soccer team fell to Maranatha Baptist in a close match on Saturday.
The Sabercats opened the scoring in the 12th minute, taking an early 1-0 lead. Despite 9 first half shots by the Red Devils, the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Shortly into the second half, freshman Julia Chlebek (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) scored her first goal of her Red Devil career in the 57th minute, assisted by fellow freshman Addison Byers (Flushing, Mich./Flushing) to level the score at 1-1.
Just 7 minutes later, Maranatha Baptist responded with a goal to take a 2-1 advantage. A third goal in the 85thminute sealed the 3-1 victory for the Sabercats.
Eureka outshot Maranatha Baptist 15-12, but had only 5 shots on goal compared to 11 by the Sabercats. Chlebek accounted for more than half of the Red Devils' shots with 8. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Jachimiak (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) played the full 90 minutes in goal and made 8 saves, just one shy of her career high.
