CLAYTON, Mo. – The Eureka women's soccer team held Fontbonne to two goals for the first time ever on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to stop the Griffins from clinching the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.
The Griffins scored once in each half to secure a 2-0 win and back-to-back league championships for the first time ever.
It was the least amount of goals the Red Devils have ever conceded against the Griffins and their first time holding Fontbonne under four goals since 2008.
Over the past three conference matches, Eureka has successfully held their opponents to three goals or less.
Daniela Gonzales (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) notched the team's lone shot on goal.
Fontbonne scored its first goal of the match in the 23rd minute when Molly Kovarik turned around and scored in the area off an assit by Kierstyn Weavre.
The home team made it 2-0 in the 55th minute when the Griffins slipped behind the Eureka defense and found Krystal Kohenskey in the middle for the finish. Claire Dalton and Caroline Neal were credited with the assist.
Eureka goalkeeper Abby Swope (Canton, Ill./Canton) – the SLIAC's all-time saves leader – tallied 16 saves on the night.
The Red Devils will look to close the 2021 season strong on Friday when the team hosts Westminster for the final game of the year. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at McKinzie Field.
