Rockford Edges Eureka Women’s Soccer in Overtime, 3-2

ROCKFORD, Ill. – For the first time since 2009, the Eureka women's soccer team went into overtime in back-to-back matches on Thursday.

But for the second time in a row, the Red Devils came up a golden goal short of victory.

Eureka fell to Rockford 3-2 in overtime after Samara Tanchuck scored the match winner for the Regents in the 98th minute.

Madison Shines (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) scored the first goal of the match for the Red Devils in the 31st minute after fighting her way into the box and finishing on a shot to the lower right side of the net. It was the junior's first goal of the season and the 10th of her career.

The Red Devils led 1-0 at halftime, but Rockford came up with the equalizer just 42 seconds in the second half. After Mia Ostler ran on to a through ball by Peyton Scott and put it away.

It stayed that way until the 77th minute, when Scott volleyed a ball off a corner kick by Tanchuck into the upper left corner.

Eureka didn't have as many chances to score as Rockford did on the night – finishing with 11 shots to the Regents' 28 – but the team continued to push forward to create opportunities. In the 84th minute, Daniela Gonzales (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods/Lincoln) scored her first goal in maroon and gold following a free kick from outside the box by Lindsey Johnston (Evansville, Ind./Harrison).

Goalkeeper Abby Swope (Canton, Ill./Canton) tallied 10 saves on the night for the Red Devils.

After the two overtime losses, Eureka (0-2) will have two days to recover. Then, on the Sunday, the Red Devils are back home for a non-conference challenge against Defiance at 1 p.m.
