EUREKA – The Eureka women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 5-1 season-opening home match against Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at McKinzie Field.

The Red Devils came out with plenty of energy, but they couldn't sustain it for all 90 minutes.

The Tigers scored twice in the first half, once in the 25th minute off a cross and once off an own goal following a corner kick in the 41st.

Sophomore Madison Shines (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) delivered the Red Devils' first goal of the season in the 59th minute following a terrific free kick by Lindsey Johnston (Evansville, Ind./Harrison) from over 30 yards out.

Shines made a run into the box, settled the ball out of the air and poked it into the back of the net before the keeper could get her hands on it.

A minute later, the team got an unexpected boost when Iowa Wesleyan's Jacqueline Ivers drew her second yellow card of the game and the Tigers went down to 10 players.

However, the visitors quickly recovered, capitalizing on a missed clearance to make it 3-1. The Tigers scored twice more in the final 10 minutes to seal it.

Izela Avalos scored two goals for the Tigers, while Ingryd Lima and Jacqueline Campos each found the back of the net once.

Kayla Enochs (Greenfield, Ind./Central Greenfield) recorded nine saves in her first match in net for the Red Devils.
