ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Eureka wrestling team made its return to the mat after the holiday break on Saturday.

The Red Devils competed at the Fred Johnson Duals in Augustana and won two of three duals on the men's side.

Eureka opened the day with a 20-18 victory over NCAA Division II Quincy, then blew out Westminster, 42-9, and finished the day with a 30-21 loss against Augustana. The squad is now 4-1 in duals this season.

"I could say something for every single guy on the team as we saw flashes of skill and toughness throughout the day," EC coach Eric Biehl said of the men's team. "Overall, we didn't complete the goal of going 3-0, but we competed very well, and what we aim for in our program."

On the women's side, Eureka didn't have enough numbers to pick up team teams, falling 20-15 against Quincy, 28-5 against eventual tournament champion Westminster, and 27-6 against Augustana.

"The women's team competed well in every match," Biehl said. "Gada (Bryant) didn't get to see any competition, but she earned us lots of team points with forfeits. Audrey (Driskell) wrestled very well, only dropping two close matches could have went her way."

In the first matchup of the day, Eureka split 10 matches to get the edge over the Hawks and got the edge by scoring a pin, a tech fall and two decisions to Quincy's tech fall, major decision and three decisions.

Eureka's Jake Jozwiak (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake North/Lincoln) scored the first of three dual-opening pins on the day against Isaac Bourge to set the tone for the Red Devils at 125.

At 133, Gaige Owens (Marion, Ill./Marion/Iowa Wesleyan) followed it with a 9-2 decision over Hunter Vernon to extend the lead to 9-0, then Mar-Trece Smith came back and put the Hawks on the board with a 10-6 decision at 141.

That was the first of three straight wins for Quincy. Phillip Sims defeated Dominic Tenayuca (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs/Lincoln) by major decision and Julian Soli earned a decision over Anthony Sartori to give the Hawks the lead.

Eureka's Andrew Sims (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth/Lincoln) ended the drought with a 15-1 tech fall over Qunicy's Humberto Pinter to briefly regain the lead.

Quincy's Judah Yates put the Hawks ahead again with a decision over Bradden Davis (Mount Vernon, Ill./Mount Vernon), who bumped up and gave up 35 pounds to try to give the Red Devils a chance at team points at 174.

After that, Thomas Culp (Quincy, Ill./Quincy/Lincoln) and Jackson Creasy (Lake of the Ozarks, Mo./ Osage/Lincoln) delivered 9-3 and 10-5 decisions, respectively to give Eureka a five-point edge heading into the last match.

In the heavyweight match, Eureka's Roberto Castellano (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg/Lincoln) wrestled a smart match and dropped a close, 2-0 match, clinching a 20-18 victory for the Red Devils.

"The men's team started off the day great," Biehl said. "It was a total team effort to beat D2 Quincy."

Eureka 42, Westminster 9

In the second dual of the day, the Red Devils scored wins by fall or forfeit in the first four matches to take a 24-0 lead. Westminster came back and picked up wins by decision at 157 and 165 to make it 24-6, then Eureka closed it out by winning three of the last four.

Jozwiak, once again, started the Red Devils off with a pin and a 6-0 advantage.

Nathan Berta (Channahon, Ill./Minooka/ Calumet College of St Joseph) and Tenayuca both delivered falls at 141 and 149, respectively. The former pinned Wyatt Cooley and the latter pinned Michael Roberts.

Then, after dropping two decisions and winning by forfeit, Culp notched the team's fourth and final fall of the match over Christopher Corley to give Eureka 42-6 advantage.

Castellano came close in an 8-7 decision in the heavyweight match.

Augustana 30, Eureka 21

For the third and final time of the day, Jozwiak opened the dual with a fall, this time pinning Jack Reina at 125.

Augustana's Trevor Boryla came back and handed Owens his first loss of the day with an 11-3 major decision at 133.

Berta pinned Kameron Hanel to give Eureka two falls and a 12-4 lead, but Augustana responded with a decision and a fall to take a 13-12 lead.

Sims scored his second win of the day with a 3-0 decision over Ray Herd to 165 to return the lead to the Red Devils, but then the home team took over. The Vikings notched three straight victories – two falls and a tech – to put the match out of reach.

In the heavyweight match, Castellano ended the day with a fall to send the Red Devils out with a win.
