Red Devils Dominate in SLIAC Opener

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Eureka women's basketball team got off to a fast start on Tuesday night and never looked back, dominating Blackburn 95-45 in their SLIAC opener.

From the opening tip, the Red Devils were in control, jumping out to a 13-0 lead. Eureka held Blackburn scoreless for nearly 7 minutes to start the game and maintained their lead for the remainder of the first quarter, finishing with a 20-7 advantage.

In the second quarter, Eureka broke the game wide open, extending their lead to as much as 28 points. By halftime, two Red Devils—Elena Redgate (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) and Miya Webb (Indianapolis, Ind./Brownsburg)—had reached double figures in scoring, and Eureka held a 51-24 lead. Redgate scored all 11 of her points in the second quarter alone.

Eureka kept up the pressure in the second half, starting with a 10-0 scoring run. After a couple of made free throws by Blackburn, the Red Devils continued their dominant play, extending the lead to 70-26. The Beavers ended the Eureka run but were still down by 38 points heading into the final quarter.

As they had throughout the game, the Red Devils began the fourth quarter with another big scoring run. An 11-0 stretch pushed Eureka's lead to 48 points with just under six minutes remaining. With 2:15 left, Eureka reached its largest lead of the night, when Allysa Taylor (Tehachapi, Calif./Tehachapi) stole the ball and scored on a fast break, giving the Red Devils a 55 point lead. Eureka closed out the game with a 95-45 victory to claim a road win in their SLIAC opener.

  • The Red Devils dominated defensively, forcing 43 turnovers and scoring 44 points off those turnovers.
  • The 50 point margin of victory is Eureka's second largest over Blackburn in program history.
  • Alyssa Zarello (Bushnell, Ill./Bushnell) led the Red Devils in scoring off the bench with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
  • Maxine Najera (Riverside, Calif./Hillcrest) and Miya Webb each scored 12 points.
  • Sierra Garcia-Reisch (Las Animas, Colo./La Junta) and Allanah Jackson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) led the team with 5 steals each. Garcia-Reisch also contributed 10 points.
  • Josie Ness (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) led the team in rebounds with 7 and added 8 points off the bench.

UP NEXT
The Red Devils (2-2, 1-0) will return home on Tuesday, Dec. 3, for a nonconference matchup against Mount Mary (3-3). Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
