Griffins Top Red Devils In Final Seconds, 68-66

EUREKA, IL. – A late three-pointer put Fontbonne on top of the Eureka women's basketball team, 68-66, on Wednesday night at the Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena and Convocation Center.

Eureka junior guard Brin Hultz (Quincy, Ill./Travecca Nazarene) led the Red Devils in scoring, posting 23 points and 9 rebounds. Josie Ness (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) recorded her seventh double-double of the season, tallying 13 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Ashley Wilcox (Hudson, Ill./Normal West) and Makayla Rosenbery (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) each contributed 8 points to the Red Devils' scoring efforts. Katie Haffner (Lake Camelot, Ill./Illini Bluffs) and Ariel Chism (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) each added 7 points off the bench.

The Griffins went on a scoring-run late in the 2nd quarter which would send them into halftime up 36-25. But, the Red Devils would not go away easily. Basket by basket, Eureka clawed their way back into the game. EC freshman Ashley Wilcox was instrumental in the comeback before fouling out with 6 minutes left on the clock. Even with Wilcox on the bench, the maroon and gold recovered the lead with just under 4 minutes to play off a Brin Hultz three-pointer.

In the final minute, Hultz knocked down another big shot from behind the arc to give the Red Devils a 1-point lead, 66-65. With 12 seconds left on the clock, though, Fontbonne's Ja'mise Bailey sank a towering triple to take back the lead, 68-66. This score would hold, as Eureka failed to convert on the final possession.

Eureka (4-10, 2-5 SLIAC) will be in action again on Saturday in Fulton, MO, where they will take on in-conference opponent, Westminster College (5-8, 3-3 SLIAC).
