EUREKA – The Eureka softball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests at Sweitzer Field against Augustana on Wednesday, falling 10-2 in five innings in Game 1 and 10-5 in Game 2.

Game 1: Augustana 10, Eureka 2 (5 inn.)

The visiting Vikings came out strong, racking up 10 runs in the first three innings of play.

Eureka tallied two runs on five hits, scoring its first on an RBI double to left-center by Mackenzie Daniels (Monticello, Ill./Monticello) in the first inning. Gada Bryant (Westville, Ill. / Bismark-Henning/Rossville-Alvin/Lincoln) preceded it with a one-out single and scored from first base.

At the time it was 3-1, but Augustana took full control with a six-run second inning. Kloe Wheeler (Farmington, Ill./Farmington Central/Heartland) scored an unearned run after a dropped fly ball in center field in the fourth inning.

Wheeler, Macey Whisker (Washington, Ill./Washington/Illinois Central College) and Delaney Douglas (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) also had singles in the loss.

Game 2: Augustana 10, Eureka 5

Whisker went 2-for-3 with a double in the leadoff spot and Alayla Thornton (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria/Trinity International) recorded her second home run of the past three games in a more competitive Game 2.

The Red Devils drew first blood, scoring two unearned runs in the first inning. Whisker scored on a muffed throw following a stolen base by Bryant and Daniels plated a run with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0.

Eureka kept Augustana off the board in the third inning, but the Vikings rallied for seven runs on six hits in the third to take a five-run lead.

The Red Devils got one back in the bottom half to trim the lead to four, then Augustana and Eureka traded pairs of runs in the fourth inning. Thornton's two-run bomb to right field put EC back within four runs.

The Vikings then manufactured what ended up being the last run of the game in the top of the fifth.
