Red Devils Lose Two at Westminster

FULTON, Mo. – The Eureka softball team dropped a pair of tough contests on the road against St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Westminster on Saturday.

The Blue Jays bested the Red Devils 11-3 in six innings in Game 1 and 10-2 in five innings in Game 2.

Game 1: Westminster 11, Eureka 3 (6 inn.)

Remi Ferguson (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) went 2-for-3, Raelyn Payne (Lexington, Ill./Lexington) had a double, and Morgan Ledbetter (Hanna City, Ill./Elmwood) and Torre Koontz (Lakewood, Ill./Shelbyville) each singled in the Red Devils' opening game loss.

Westminster recorded 11 runs on 10 hits, with the bulk coming in the second inning.

After an RBI single by Ledbetter scored Payne to put Eureka on the board in the top of the first inning, the Blue Jays notched six runs on five hits and one EC error in the second inning.

The Red Devils responded in the third with a pair of RBI singles by Ferguson and Koontz in the third, but Westminster plated another run in the bottom half to make it 7-3. Then, in the fifth, the Blue Jays scored two more before finally ending it with a two-run home run by Mackenzie Myers in the sixth.

Game 2: Westminster 10, Eureka 2 (5 inn.)

Eureka struck first again in Game 2, with Ledbetter's third long ball of the year giving EC a 2-0 advantage.

Westminster's Brooke Laidley delivered a solo shot in the bottom half. Then, in the second, the Blue Jays rallied for five more, with Laidley knocking her second home run of the day, a three-run bomb that made it 6-2.

The Blue Jays added three runs on three hits in the fourth and topped it off with a run on a hit batsman in the fifth.

Coming Up

Eureka (3-8, 2-3 SLIAC) will host Fontbonne (7-7, 3-1 SLIAC) in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday at Sweitzer Field.
