Men’s Soccer Drops Close Match to Greenville

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Greenville at McKinzie Field on Wednesday night.

Eureka started the game strong defensively, holding Greenville scoreless for the majority of the first half. However, just over 30 seconds before halftime, the Red Devils had a defensive lapse on a corner kick, conceding the first goal of the match and giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Red Devils were much more aggressive offensively, pushing hard to find an equalizer. Eureka recorded 10 of their 12 shots in this half but were unable to capitalize on several great scoring opportunities. In the 71st minute, as the Red Devils pressed higher up the field in search of a goal, the Panthers broke in the other direction and scored, extending their lead to 2-0. That would be the final goal of the match, as Greenville held on for the victory.

Greenville outshot Eureka 19-12 and had 4 shots on target, compared to 3 for Eureka. Brayton Strawkas (Buffalo, Ill./Tri-City) made his second consecutive start in goal for the Red Devils, recording 2 saves. Joyce Kabesa (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington) was the Red Devils' biggest threat going forward, recording 6 shots, 3 of which were on target.
