ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Eureka men's soccer team came just a few minutes away from notching an impressive result on the road against St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader Webster on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils held the Gorloks scoreless for almost 87 minutes, but with three minutes, 16 seconds left on the clock, Mark Moore put the home team ahead and Webster went on to win it 1-0.

A 0-0 draw would have made the Red Devils only the second team in the SLIAC to draw with the league unbeaten Gorloks (11-1-3, 9-0-2 SLIAC), and it would have been EC's first against Webster in program history.

The maroon and gold instead walked away having erased five of the six goals allowed from the teams' previous meeting, but the Gorloks escaped with the point.

Eureka goalkeeper Brayton Strawkas (Buffalo, Ill./Tri-City) had a standout night in goal, making seven saves and turning the away nearly all of the action that came his way.

The Red Devils defense withstood a barrage of attacks from Webster throughout the game. By the end of the match, the Gorloks had tallied 30 shots and put eight on frame.

On the other end of the pitch, Khalil Alleyne (Diego Martin, Trinidad/Fatima College/Lincoln) and Raphael Mungu (Bloomington, Ill./Normal) each recorded a shot. Alleyne had one of the Red Devils' best chances to get on the board in the second half when he broke through the defense and made it into the box on the left side. Before he could get a shot off, however, a Webster defender slid from behind and poked the ball away to end the threat.

Moore's match-winning goal happened rather unexpectedly. It started with a clearance from the goalkeeper that led to a pass from the defense up to the Colby Kapp on the left side. Kapp then sent it straight up the field to Moore, who took a long touch and beat his man, turned into the box and fired from just outside the left side of the six-yard box before the defense could get back.

Eureka (4-9-2, 2-7-2 SLIAC) will next host Fontbonne (5-5-6, 4-4-2 SLIAC) in SLIAC play at McKinzie Field on Friday at 5 p.m.
