EUREKA – The Eureka men's soccer team fell to Greenville 8-0 in a match that was closer than the score reflected early, but got out of hand early in the second half.
The first half was a competitive affair in which the Panthers gradually seized the upper hand.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead with a goal by Pablo Valverde off an assist by Claudio Trevino in the 17th minute. Valverde launched a high, knuckling shot from 25 yards out on the left side that caromed right over the keeper's hands.
It remained a one-goal match until Napolean Urquidi got through on the right side and buried one from a tough angle with about 10 minutes until halftime. The Panthers took the momentum for good with a goal by Enrique Yanguas and off an assist by Claudio Trevino a little over a minute later.
In the second half, Greenville put any hopes of an EC comeback to rest early, scoring twice in the first three minutes. Lucas Soares, Pedro Gonzalez-Moro, Jared McPeek and Maximiliono Castillo all found the back of the net for the Panthers in the second half.
Goalkeeper Isaac Hughes (Westville, Ill./Westville) posted 11 saves in 90 minutes in net. Justin Siebert (Hopedale, Ill./Olympia) recorded a shot on goal for the Red Devils in the first half.
On Saturday, Eureka (0-5, 0-3 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) heads south to take on Spalding (2-4-1, 1-1-0) at 1 p.m.
