EUREKA, Ill. – An 86th-minute goal from sophomore Adam Newell (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) cut the Eureka College men's soccer team's deficit in half, but a frantic last-minute rally from the Red Devils ultimately came up short in a 2-1 non-conference defeat to Lincoln Christian, Monday night at McKinzie Field.

The visitors struck first in the 12th minute when Keaton Doty collected a turnover on the EC back line and raced down the middle of the pitch before skipping a shot along the turf inside the far post for a 1-0 lead. The Red Lions made it 2-0 when Joshua Garcia tucked a crossing pass from Roberto Yepez under the cross bar at 39:52.

Trailing 2-0, Eureka took 11 of its 18 shots after halftime. The Red Devils were finally rewarded when Newell scored from close range amidst chaos in the box at 85:21. Eureka continued pushing forward over the final four minutes and had an opportunity to convert a corner kick in the match's final 10 seconds, but the Red Devils never got a clean look at the net before time expired and LCU escaped with the 2-1 win.

Newell's goal was the first of his career. Daniel Johnson (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) continued his march to the all-time Eureka saves record, making 10 stops to increase his career total 282. He'll enter Wednesday's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at MacMurray needing 11 saves to match Tyler Mumm's mark of 293 set between 2010 and 2013.

Eureka and MacMurray will begin their SLIAC match Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ill.
