Red Devils Suffer Loss in Rematch with Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - The Eureka men's basketball team fell to Monmouth 80-73 on Wednesday in their second meeting of the season against the Scots.

The first half between the Red Devils and the Scots was marked by a strong start from the Red Devils, who took an early 4-0 lead with a layup by Raymond Bandzoumouna Jr. (Lisle, Ill./Lisle) and two free throws by Jacob Gonzalez (Los Angeles, Calif./Chatsworth Charter). The Scots then responded with a series of successful buckets, including a 3-pointer by Jordan Hill at and a layup by Zay Brown, shifting the momentum in their favor. The Scots capitalized on the Red Devils' turnovers, extending their lead to 43-28 by the end of the half. Despite the Red Devils' attempts to keep pace, the Scots maintained control.

In the second half, the Scots started strong with a 45-28 lead over the Red Devils, but the Red Devils' persistence was evident as they narrowed the gap. Emaryon Byrd (Peoria, Ill./Manual) contributed to the Red Devils' efforts with a layup at 14:22, bringing the score to 36-47. Peewee Brown (Peoria, Ill./Manual) was a key player for the Red Devils, scoring a layup and a free throw within a short span to further close the gap to 60-69 with 2:45 remaining. Despite the Red Devils' strong push, the Scots managed to maintain their lead, concluding the game with an 80-73 victory.

Peewee Brown led Eureka in scoring with 19 points, including 7 baskets made. Micah Bruer (Washington, Ill./Washington) recorded 2 steals, contributing to the team's defensive efforts. Max Richardson (LaHarpe, Ill./Illini West) also made a significant impact by scoring a career-high 11 points, with 5 shots made. Jonah Lauff (Pana, Ill./Pana) was efficient from the field, scoring 10 points without missing a shot, and recorded a career-high with 7 rebounds, leading the team in this category.
