Eureka Falls to Webster in SLIAC Opener at Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. – The Red Devils opened SLIAC play against Webster on Saturday at Illinois State University but were unable to come away with a victory, dropping both games of the doubleheader. Eureka fell 12-1 in five innings in Game 1 before falling 9-1 in Game 2.

GAME 1 – Webster 12, Eureka 1 (5 Innings)

Webster defeated Eureka 12-1 in the opening game of the day at Duffy Bass Field.

The Red Devils got on the board in the third inning, cutting into Webster's lead. Noah Company (Le Roy, Ill./Le Roy) singled to left field and advanced to second on an error. After a sacrifice bunt by Nickolas Cartmill (Fort Worth, Texas/Burleson), Company moved to third. Two walks loaded the bases, and an error by Webster's shortstop allowed Company to score, making it a 4-1 game.

Eureka had another scoring opportunity in the fourth. Jon Leon Guerrero (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) drew a walk, and back-to-back singles by Company and Cartmill loaded the bases with one out. However, the Gorloks' defense held strong, keeping the Red Devils from pushing any more runs across, and Webster held onto its 6-1 lead.

In the sixth, Company continued his strong performance with a double to right-center field, but Eureka was unable to bring him home. The Red Devils' final push came in the seventh when David Hidden (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) doubled to left, but the inning ended without further scoring as Webster secured the win, 12-1.
