Webster Edges Red Devils in Regular Season Finale, 9-7

SAUGET, Ill. – Webster held off the Eureka baseball team in a 9-7 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Sunday.

The matchup brought the 2022 regular season to a close for both games. The Red Devils will open the SLIAC Tournament with a quarterfinal showdown at Spalding on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

On Sunday, Eureka scored the first three runs of the game in the first three innings, but the Gorloks tallied got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and took control with a six-run fourth.

The Red Devils didn't go away from there. They plated another run in fifth and sixth and got two runs back in the ninth to make it a two-run game. It just wasn't enough to close the gap.

Webster got the win despite getting outhit by the maroon and gold 12-8.

Braden Cox (Washington, Ill./Illini Bluffs/Blackhawk) went 4-for-5 and scored a run for the Red Devils.

Karter Hostetler (Morton, Ill./Morton) put Eureka on the board with an RBI double and went 2-for-4 on the day. He contributed a single and an RBI sac fly in the fifth.

Lane Marlow (Camp Point, Ill./Camp Point Central) notched two hits, including a double and a two-run single in the ninth.

Caleb Wilson (Houma, La./Covington Christian) also had two hits, along with a run scored, a walk and a stolen base.

Jimmy Peterson (Bloomington, Ill./Homeschooled/Monmouth) added an RBI single in the first. He also reached on an error that allowed Eureka's third run to score in the third. Dylan Hill (Steeleville, Ill./Steeleville) scored an unearned run in the sixth, as well.

Trevor Wingard (Decatur, Ill./Meridian) started the game on the mound for the Red Devils and limited Webster to three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Sheldon Geuvens (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) took over in the fourth and only allowed one earned run in 3 1/3 innings, and Tate Stone (Washington, Ill./Washington) recorded a scoreless inning.

Webster, which clinched its 15th straight SLIAC league title, improved to 34-6 on the year and 18-2 in SLIAC play. The Red Devils complete the regular season 16-21 on the season and 7-13 in conference play.
