SAUGET, Ill. – The Eureka baseball team fell to Webster in a pair of St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests on Saturday.
The Gorloks took Game 1, 15-4, and earned a 9-5 victory over the Red Devils in Game 2.
Game 1: Webster 15, Eureka 4
Webster tallied 15 runs on 10 hits in the opening game of the last conference series of the season.
The Gorloks scored in bunches, while the Red Devils added one run at a time.
Nick Rulevish (Addieville, Ill./Okawville) drove in a run with an RBI single in the third and fourth innings, Braden Cox (Washington, Ill./Illini Bluffs/Black Hawk) had an RBI sac fly in the fifth, and Ethan Hedge (North Pekin, Ill./Pekin) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh.
Rulevish went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Austin Davis (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) contributed a pair of doubles. Jimmy Peterson (Bloomington, Ill./Homeschooled/Monmouth) added a pair of hits, and Cox and Dylan Hill (Steeleville, Ill./Steeleville) each had a double.
Game 2: Webster 9, Eureka 5
Eureka made Game 2 a closer contest. The Red Devils were within three runs after four innings and trimmed the Webster lead to two in the sixth, but the Gorloks tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and held off EC from there.
Cox drove in the Red Devils' first run of the game in the first inning on an RBI groundout.
By the time the fourth inning rolled around was in a six-run hole. Eureka cut that in half with a three-run fourth inning that included a double by Davis, an RBI single by Cox, an RBI groundout by Peterson and an RBI single by Hill.
In the fourth inning, Eureka got two on and scored another run on a wild pitch that allowed Karter Hostetler (Morton, Ill./Morton) to score and make it 7-5. That ended up being the closest the Red Devils would come.
Davis and Hostetler each went 2-for-4 with a double for the Red Devils. David Hidden (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) notched a double as well.
Ryan Bredeson (Washington, Ill./Washington) pitched five solid innings in relief, only allowing one earned run on six hits and two walks.
