Eureka Completes Series Against No. 2 Webster

EUREKA – The Eureka baseball team wrapped up their series against a powerful and highly-touted Webster team on Saturday.

The Gorloks – who are ranked second in the Perfect Game rankings and are sixth in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA rankings – completed the sweep with a 19-1 win and a 16-6 win.

Game 1: Webster 19, Eureka 1 (7 inn.)

Webster continued its dominant pitching weekend on Saturday with Jordan Smevoll collecting the win after limiting EC to one run on four hits and two walks in five innings while striking out six. After that, Bobby Standt pitched two scoreless innings to finish it off.

The Gorloks plated 19 runs on 15 hits, scoring two in the first, four in the second, five in the third, four in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Eureka scored its lone run in the fourth on an RBI single by Braden Cross (Clinton, Ill./Clinton). Kyle Christman (Peru, Ill./La Salle-Peru) went 2-for-3, while pitcher Gregory Cluksey (East Peoria, Ill./Metamora) collected his first career hit and Tate Stone (Washington, Ill./Washington) singled as well.

Game 2: Webster 16, Eureka 6

In the final game of the series, the Red Devils scored all their runs off notable home runs.  

Stone produced the first home run of his collegiate career with a two-run bomb in the fifth inning. Then, in the sixth, Cross followed with his first career home run. Finally, in the seventh, Cross went yard again with his second two-run shot of the day.

Webster, however, scored 16 runs on 19 hits, including 14 RBIs. The Gorloks tallied three home runs and eight doubles. The visitors opened with five runs in the first, then added one in the second, two in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth, two in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Trevor Wingard (Decatur, Ill./Meridian) Cluskey and Stone combined for nine strikeouts on the mound.
