Webster Pitchers Shut Down Red Devils

EUREKA – On Friday, the Eureka baseball team met one of the top teams in the country when Webster came to town.

The Gorloks – who are ranked second in the Perfect Game rankings and are sixth in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA rankings – swept the Red Devils in memorable fashion at Henry Sand Field, recording two no-hitters.

Game 1: Webster 11, Eureka 0 (7 inn.)

Webster's Matt Mulhearn threw a no-hitter and struck out a school-record 17 batters in an 11-0 series-opening win.

Alex Barney (Sheldon, Ill./Milford) drew the Red Devils' only walk of the game and Kyle Christman (Peru, Ill./La Salle-Peru) stole a base in the first inning after reaching on an error. Other that that, the Gorloks didn't give EC much to work with at Henry Sand Field.

Webster tallied 11 runs on 14 hits, including two home runs and a double.

Freshman Ryan Bredeson (Washington, Ill./Washington) recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in seven innings on the hill for the Red Devils.

Game 2: Webster 12, Eureka 0

J.T. Miller, Joey Marko and Ben Kowalski combined for a seven-inning no-hitter in the nightcap at Henry Sand Field. Miller struck out five and walked two in 4 2/3 innings to record the win for the Gorloks.

Eureka's Jimmy Peterson (Bloomington, Ill./Homeschooled) and Kelton O'Grady (Camp Verde, Arizona/Camp Verde) each drew a walk for the Red Devils

The Gorloks scored 12 runs on 10 hits, including three doubles and a home run. Webster took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, then rallied for seven more in the fifth and added one more in the sixth.

Coming Up

Eureka will look to get the bats going against the Gorloks in the second doubleheader of this series on Saturday at noon.
