EC Baseball Falls to Centre, 11-1

DANVILLE, Ky. — Eureka College baseball's out-of-state spring break trip came to a close with an 11-1 loss to Centre on a windy Friday evening at Montgomery Field.

The Colonels held the Red Devils to one run on four hits in seven innings before reaching an agreed-upon 10-run rule with a five-run seventh-inning.

Eureka junior Jake Carter (Carlinville, Ill./Carlinville) went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Senior Grant Mullin (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) had a double and a stolen base and sophomore Dean Moir (Coal City, Ill./Coal City) had a single.

Centre first took control in the second inning with a five-run rally that included four hits and two errors.

Mullin delivered the Red Devils' first hit of the game with two outs in the fourth inning, doubling down the left-field line. He reached third on a steal, but EC didn't get on the board until the following frame.

Carter led off the top of the fifth with a single. Then, Moir singled to put two on with one out. With two outs, freshman Charles Mangold (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) reached on an error to load the bases, and sophomore Mike Redmond proceeded to draw an RBI walk.

Centre, however, answered with another run in the bottom half to make it 6-1, and two innings later, racked up five runs on three hits and an error.

The Colonels had 10 hits, with Will Kirk and Drew Schacht providing two a piece at the top of the order. Sam Shelley allowed four hits and three walks while striking out two in six innings to get the win.

EC freshman Brock Pettit pitched 4 2/3 innings, struck out four, and conceded six hits, three walks and two earned runs in a losing effort for the Red Devils.

The Red Devils will next take on Elmhurst and Illinois College on Sunday in Jacksonville, Illinois, at 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
