Webster swipes a pair from Eureka College baseball

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College freshman infielder Jake Miller(Washington, Ill./Washington) picked up a pair of hits, and senior pitcher John Kurtz (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) limited Webster to three runs over four innings, but the Gorloks erupted for nine runs over the final three innings to secure a 12-2 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Red Devils, Sunday afternoon at Henry Sand Field. The Gorloks took game two, 4-0.

Webster struck first in the top of the second with a solo home run to left center from infielder Jeff Kammer.

Sophomore outfielder Jake Schnulle (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock North [Cardinal Stitch]) evened the contest with a sacrifice fly to right to bring home senior infielder Seth Aydt (Washington, Ill./Washington).

In the following at-bat Miller squared up a 0-1 pitch and roped it down the left field line to score classmate Grant Mullin (Hegewisch, Ill./St. Rita) and give Eureka a 2-1 lead after two innings of work.

Webster shut the door after that, limiting Eureka to just two hits over the final five innings of play.

The right-handed Kurtz toed the rubber for 4.1 innings, surrendering nine hits and six runs.

The Gorloks used three arms to surrender just four hits over seven innings. Jack Bensinger picked up the victory, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing two runs. Bensinger scattered four hits, struck out eight and walked two.

Miller added a double in game two, finishing the day with a trio of hits, including a pair of doubles.

Senior RHP Nick Finney (Washington, Ill./Washington [Illinois Valley CC]) pitched effective over 7.0 innings of work. Finney allowed nine hits, struck out five, walked and hit a pair of batters.

Freshman pitchers Tyler Woods (Oblong, Ill./Oblong) and Mitch Smith (Morton, Ill./Morton) made their first appearances in a varsity contest, firing 3.1 innings of relief work over the two contests.

Eureka and Webster will wrap up their three-game set tomorrow with a nine-inning tilt scheduled for 3 p.m.
