ST. LOUIS – After getting off to a strong start to the distance season this weekend, Eureka's Karissa Heffernan (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) is the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week.

The Red Devils' junior standout led for the entirety of her first race of the season at the Titan First Chance Meet on Saturday, winning the mile in 5:37.04. She successfully improved on her time at the meet last year.

Later in the day, she also helped EC's 4x400-meter relay team place third in 5:03.29.

This is her fifth SLIAC weekly honor in the past calendar year. She was selected SLIAC Women's Outdoor Track Athletic of the Week last spring and received SLIAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors three times this fall.

Saturday's meet was an opportunity for teams to shake off rust and get a feel for the track in advance of the winter indoor season. Heffernan and the Red Devils will continue the distance season on Jan. 20 at the Monmouth Midwest Invitational at 10:30 a.m.
