EUREKA – The Eureka women's soccer team couldn't find the back of the net against Greenville on Tuesday, but the Red Devils held the Panthers to four goals for the first time since 2010.

The Red Devils' 4-0 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference loss at McKinzie Field on Tuesday is the closest the team has played Greenville since 2012 when the team came within three in a 5-2 loss at Traister Field on Oct. 24, 2012.

These are steps in the right direction for a program that has never beaten Greenville in women's soccer.

Greenville went on the attack early and took a 1-0 lead in the second minute when Maddie Missey headed in a corner kick from Emma Cadwell.

The visitors made it 2-0 16 minute later, when Molly McDonnell buried a screamer that went off the bottom of the cross bar just to the left of the upper 90 after Jen De Leon De Leon played a nice ball to her in space 10 yards from the goal.

The third goal came with 10 minutes left in the half when Athena Hagerman put away a cross from the right side by Kat Stroot. Greenville went into halftime up 3-0, but scored less than five minutes in the second half to extend the lead to four. The Red Devils kept them from scoring again the rest of the way.

Daniela Gonzales (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods/Lincoln) notched two shots on goal for the maroon and gold, and Lindsey Johnston (Evansville, Ind./Harrison) had the team's best scoring chance late – a one-timer from 25 yards out that the keeper got to before it could bend inside the near post.

Goalkeeper Abby Swope (Canton, Ill./Canton) tallied 18 saves in 90 minutes in net. She made Greenville earn every goal on Tuesday.

This weekend, Eureka (2-4, 1-2 SLIAC) will head south to face Spalding (2-3-1, 0-1-1 SLIAC) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
