Eureka Wrestling Drops Aurora Dual

EUREKA – On Friday night, the Eureka wrestling team hosted Aurora University in its second ever home competition.

After starting at a deficit due to a forfeit, Trevor Hedges (Canton, Ill. / Canton) won by fall and leveled the score for the Red Devils men's side at 6-6. Despite going down 16-6, Mikie Hartnett (Morton, Ill. / Morton) won by fall to add 6 points to the Red Devil's tally and Anthony Sartori (Channahon, Ill. / Minooka) won by decision to add another 3, pulling it back to 16-15.

Thomas Culp (Quincy, Ill. / Quincy) would later add another 3 points with a win by decision. In the end, Aurora came out on top, defeating Eureka by a score of 31-18.

The Eureka women also took on a very tough Aurora team on Friday.

Gada Bryant (Westville, Ill. / Westville) and Kyley Bair (Peoria, Ill. / Richwoods) helped the maroon and gold to an early lead. Bryant won by fall and Bair by decision to jump out to an 8-5 lead. Mckenzie Cook (Homer, Alaska) also won by tech fall to add to the Red Devil's score.

Eureka would ultimately fall short, as Aurora continued on to a 29-12 victory.

Coach Biehl later commented: "We had some unfortunate things happen right before we went out to wrestle that impacted the outcome. Aurora's men's and women's teams are both tough and I am proud of how our teams competed against them with all things considered. Our wrestlers showed a lot of heart and fought in every position."

The Eureka wrestling teams will be back in action on Sunday, January 7th for the Augustana Viking Duals in Rock Island, Illinois.
