Eureka Falls in Two at Franklin

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Eureka softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Franklin on Sunday, falling 4-1 in a close one and 11-0 in five innings.

Game 1: Franklin 4, Eureka 1

Eureka scored its lone run of the day in the sixth inning when Macey Whisker (Washington, Ill./Washington/Illinois Central College) advanced from second to home on a throwing error after Ashlyn Voyles (Blue Ridge, Ill./Farmer City) reached on a fielder's choice.

Bria Wessel (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners and the game-tying run at the plate, but the inning ended with a groundout a two left stranded.

 The Red Devils got two more on in the seventh to set up a potential rally, but it was stifled by fielder's choice and a double play.

Eureka had eight hits in the game, with Delaney Douglas (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and Lexi Liptak (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) both going for 2-for-3 to account for half of them. Whisker, Voyles, Wessel and Gada Bryant (Westville, Ill./Westville/Lincoln) each had one.

Claire Wuethrich (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian) only allowed four hits on eight hits and two walks in innings. Rachel Dawson (Stanford, Ill./Homeschooled) pitched a scoreless sixth innings, only allowing one hit and successfully stranding two runners.

Game 2: Franklin 11, Eureka 0 (5 inn.)

Franklin pitcher Stephanni Kleber held Eureka to four hits and zero runs in 4 1/3 innings, and Kyle Kadel got the last two outs to close it out.

Eureka's Carmen Howard (Warrensburg, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham) went 2-for-2, while KayLee Hohlbauch (Arcola, Ill./Arcola/Lincoln), Elly Maier (Clinton, Ill./Clinton) and Angie Valenzuela (Turlock, Calif./Turlock) each had one hit.

The Bears notched six runs on six hits in the first inning, and they posted five runs on three hits in the fourth, all of which were doubles.

Eureka (1-8) will take on Rose-Hulman (4-6) on the road in another non-conference doubleheader on Monday at 4 p.m.
