EC Softball Goes 1-1 at Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Eureka softball team split a pair of games at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.

The Red Devils topped Wells 11-3 in five innings in the afternoon and fell short 2-1 against Immaculata in the evening.

Game 1: Eureka 11, Wells 3

In the first game of the day, the Red Devils quickly turned a 3-0 deficit into an early-inning rout.

After conceding a run in the first inning and two more in the second, the Red Devils racked up 10 runs on 10 hits in the third inning.

The team added one more in the fifth to seal the win.

By the end of the contest, five Red Devils had notched two hits, including Adrianna Zeman (Peru, Ill./La Salle-Peru), Raelyn Payne (Lexington, Ill./Lexington), Allison Cagley (Fairbury, Ill./Prairie Central), Torre Koontz (Lakewood, Ill./Shelbyville) and Gabby Wood (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone). Cagley's were both doubles.

Koontz had three RBIs, while Payne, Cagley, Wood and Aubrey Sanders (Paris, Ill./Paris) all had two and Morgan Ledbetter (Hanna City, Ill./Elmwood) had one.

Gabby Wood got the win after limiting Wells to one earned run on three hits in three innings while walking five and striking out five.

Sidney Wightman (Waterloo, Ill./Gibault Catholic) pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hits, walking one and striking out one.

Game 2: Immaculata 2, Eureka 1

Ledbetter notched her first home run of the season, launching a solo shot over the center-field fence in the second inning to give EC a 1-0 lead.

However, Immaculata got one back in the fifth and scored what ended up being the winning run in the sixth.

Immaculatta outhit the Red Devils 7-4 on the day.

No. 1 pitcher Erin Smith (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) conceded her first loss of the season despite only giving up two runs on seven innings.

Up Next: The Red Devils (6-2) will look to finish the tournament strong on Thursday morning when they take on Dean at 8:30 a.m. and Medaille at 10:30 a.m.
