EC softball clinches spot in SLIAC Tournament with win over Webster

EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College softball team clinched a spot in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with a double header split against the Webster Gorloks, Friday afternoon in Eureka. The Red Devils' post-season berth is its first since 2013.

The host fell behind early to the Gorloks, finding themselves down 3-1 after the first inning of play.

After three scoreless innings, the Red Devils put together a three-run 5th to take their first lead of the afternoon. Sophomore Kali George (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) sliced the deficit to one with a run-scoring single and junior Rachel Patterson (Tremont, Ill./Tremont [ICC]) followed it up with a 2-run single two batters later to put EC in front.

Webster evened the score in the top of the seventh, but were unable to regain a lead, leaving the Red Devils with three outs to put away the Gorloks before extra innings ensued.

Junior Lexi Litwiller (Eureka, Ill./Eureka [Lincoln Col.]) led off with a lined double down the right field line. After a sacrifice bunt and pop out, Eureka had the winning run on third with two outs. Patterson put the 0-1 pitch in play and benefited from a miscue by WU's second baseman to beat out the throw and allow Litwiller to score the winning run.

George picked up the win in the circle, scattering five hits, striking out a pair and allowing three earned runs.

Patterson drove in three in the opener, behind a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. George added a pair of runs batted in and Litwiller crossed home twice.

The Red Devils got multi-hit outings from three individuals in the nightcap. Senior Savanna Tapper (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) notched a pair of hits and runs scored, freshman Kerrigan Dura (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) supplied two hits, two RBIs and one run scored and Litwiller finished with a pair of base knocks, a RBI and run scored.

Eureka will wait to find out their seeding after conference play wraps up, and play in their first post-season contest on Thursday at Principia College in Elsah, Ill.
