Eureka’s Season Ends Against Webster

Eureka’s Season Ends Against Webster

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Eureka baseball team fell twice to Webster on Saturday, unable to secure a needed victory.

The Red Devils finish the season with a 19-21 overall record, while going 7-11 during SLIAC play. In Noah Suarez' first year as Head Coach of the Red Devils, he was able to tie a Eureka record for most overall wins in a single season, matching the previous record of 19 wins. Saturday marked the final game for the Red Devils' strong senior class of eight players, who were celebrated two weeks ago on Senior Day.

GAME 1 | Eureka 4, Webster 7

Eureka baseball fell to the Gorloks in game 1, with a final score of 7-4, at Grizzlies Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.

Mike Dunne (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) made his tenth start of the season for the Red Devils. He allowed 5 runs on 8 hits in 5.0 innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Eureka jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Garrett Flaagan (Eagle, Colo./Eagle Valley/Williston State) grounded out to bring in Sam Buduris (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka/McKendree), putting them ahead 1-0.

The Red Devils extended the lead in the third inning when Jackson Green (Terrell, Texas/Terrell/Bacone) doubled to bring in two more runs and make the score 3-0. However, Webster fought back in the fourth inning with a two-run home run to cut the lead to 3-2.

Eureka responded in the fifth inning with a run of their own when Jackson Green's single plated his third RBI of the day. Once again, Webster responded, putting up three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take their first lead of the day.

Webster added another two runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to three runs, which they would hold on to for the rest of the game to secure a 7-4 victory over the Red Devils.

GAME 2 | Eureka 2, Webster 12

In the second game of the day, Eureka fell to Webster in seven innings, 12-2.

Brayden Williams (Chouteau, Okla./Poteau/Bacone) was on the mound, making his tenth start of the season for the Red Devils. He allowed 4 earned runs in 2.0 innings of work before Colton Yanish (LaSalle-Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru Township/Illinois Valley) entered the game in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Red Devils once again got out to an early lead, plating one run in the first inning when Jackson Green recorded his fourth RBI of the day on a groundout that brought in Nickolas Cartmill (Burleson, Texas/Burleson/Bacone).

Webster quickly responded, however, capitalizing on their opportunities at the plate to build a substantial lead.

Despite some late offense by Eureka, including a run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Gabe Peters(Washington, Ill./Washington/Mount Mercy), Webster was able to hold onto the lead and come away with a 12-2 victory.
