MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Eureka volleyball team fell in straight sets in non-conference match at Monmouth on Wednesday evening.

The Fighting Scots held off the Red Devils in a close first set, then maintained a clear upper hand in the last two sets, winning 25-22, 25-10, 25-15.

In the opening set, the home team looked poised to run away with it early, but after trailing by seven at 20-13, the Red Devils went on a 9-3 run.

Once a Brooklyn Shell (Evansville, Ind./Mount Vernon) kill brought the Red Devils within a point at 23-22, Monmouth took a timeout to regroup, then claimed the last two points of the set to end it. Eureka hit .108 with 11 kills in the first set, which were set-bests for the night.

For the Red Devils, Emma Harris (Streator, Ill./Streator) notched a team-high seven kills. Senior Corinne DeBoard (Centralia, Ill./Christ Our Rock Lutheran) followed with six kills while hitting a team best .278 on the night.

Katelin Peters (New Berlin, Ill./New Berlin) added four kills and EC's only block, and Faith Catour (Orion, Ill./Orion) and Shell each contributed three apiece. Catour distributed 20 assists. Libero and reigning St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Jordyn Fox came up with 15 digs.

Monmouth's Amanda Dybal and Layne Wright both reached double digits in kills, with 11 and 10, respectively. The win moved Monmouth to 5-1 on the season – its best start since 2001 while the Red Devils fell to 1-3.

On Friday, Eureka will head back on the road to face Lawrence – which team edged in five sets over the weekend – Friday at Mount Mary University at 3:30 p.m. and will face North Central at 8 p.m.
