EUREKA – An unassisted goal from freshman midfielder Phoenix Johnson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone H.S.) in the first half of Saturday's season-opening non-conference match versus Rockford wasn't enough as the Regents netted the match winner in the 13th minute and turned a narrow halftime lead into a 7-1 win over the Eureka College women's soccer team at McKinzie Field.
Erin DiSanti scored what held up to be the match-winning goal for a 2-0 RU lead in the 13th minute. Johnson later broke through to deliver her first collegiate goal at 34:02 to slice Eureka's deficit in half. The RU lead remained 2-1 until halftime.
Rockford went on to score five times in the final 45 minutes, including two more strikes from DiSanti, who finished with a hat trick.
Abby Swope (Canton, Ill./Canton H.S.) made 12 saves in goal in her collegiate debut. Johnson attempted all three of Eureka's shots Saturday, two of which landed on frame.
Eureka will continue its season-opening seven-match homestand on Thursday in a 2 p.m. match against Finlandia at Traister Field.
