Lakeland Spoils Home Opener

EUREKA, Ill. -- Lakeland senior defender Kelly Jens netted the match-winning goal in the third minute of Tuesday's non-conference match against the Eureka College women's soccer team, sparking the Muskies in a 9-0 season-opening victory over the Red Devils at Traister Field on the campus of Eureka College.

Jens strike, the first of LC's 38 shots on the afternoon, was all the offense the visitors would need. The Muskies would tack on four more goals in the first half to take a 5-0 cushion into intermission. Sophomore forward Mimi Pulido netted goals in the '37, '48 and '65 minute to tally a hat trick for the visitors.

Senior midfielder Kaitlyn West (Fort Worth, Texas/Haltom), senior defender Kayleigh Choma (Austintown, Ohio/Fitch) and freshman Azure'rea Hick (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) each provided the host with one shot a piece. Sophomore goal keeper Kalionna Mathews (Troy, Ill./Triad) recorded 10 saves for the Red Devils' defense.

Eureka will return to the pitch Thursday afternoon for another non-conference bout against Lincoln Christian University at 4 p.m.
