Eureka Falls to Undefeated Chicago, 71-48

EUREKA – The Eureka women's basketball team dropped a home non-conference matchup against an undefeated Chicago squad on Wednesday, falling 71-48.

After a slow start in the first half, the Red Devils matched the Maroons – who are ranked No. 10 in the country in Massey Ratings – point for point in the third quarter and scored just four fewer points in the final frame.

With the win, Chicago improved to 7-0, while Eureka moved to 2-4 on the season.

Eureka senior guard Shakaya Rogers (Hanover, Mich./Concord/Glen Oaks) posted a team-high and a season-high 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor. She made 6 of 9 free-throw attempts and was a rebound shy of a double-double, recording nine boards, along with two assists and a steal.

Fellow senior Sydney Hannam (Canton, Ill./Canton/Spoon River) notched 10 points, and another senior, Abby Stotler (Wyoming, Ill./Stark County/MacMurray) added eight points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Josie Ness (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) contributed five points, five rebounds, a steal and an assist.

Four Maroons reached double-figures, with Mallory Brodnik finishing with a team-high 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Guard Sophia North followed with 13, while Grace Hynes and Marissa Powe each had 10.

Chicago outrebounded Eureka by just one, 38-37.

The Red Devils (2-4) will next travel to Macomb on Saturday for an exhibition matchup with NCAA Division I Western Illinois (1-5). Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
