Gorloks take down Red Devils in conference play

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior Sam Feehan (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame [Illinois Central]) hit four 3-pointers and finished with 29 points and 11 rebounds, but his effort wasn't enough to topple the preseason conference favorite Webster Gorloks, falling 84-67 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action, Saturday afternoon inside the Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena and Convocation Center.

Feehan has scored in double figures in 17 of 18 games this season, ten of those scoring 20 or more points.

Eureka drops to 8-11 overall and a 6-6 mark in the conference. Webster now sits at 10-9 on the season and 7-5 in the league.

Webster raced out to an early 8-0 lead, holding the Red Devils without a basket until 17:24 when a layup by seniorGreg Kent (Chicago, Ill./Richards [Blackhawk]) put Eureka on the board.

Eureka chipped away at the deficit, eventually taking a two-point lead behind a 3-pointer by freshman Shea Feehan(Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame [Lewis]) putting the Red Devils in front 24-22 with 6:05 left in the half. The Red Devils held their only lead for 18 seconds before a 12-5 run to close out the half put the Gorloks in front 34-29 at intermission.

The Gorloks slowly built a double-digit lead over the course of the second half as the Red Devils were unable to engineer any significant offensive bursts. Webster shot 48.3 percent (14-of-29) in the half, but did most of their damage at the free throw line, finishing 20-of-23 (.870). Eureka was held to 34.1 percent (15-of-44) from the field over the final half of play, including just 5-of-22 (.227) from beyond arc.

Webster's Hunter Ward scored a team-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the visitors. For the game the Gorloks shot 45.9 percent from the field (28-of-61) and hit 24-of-27 (.889) free throws.
