Loyola uses big inning to drop Eureka

WESTWEGO, La. – Freshman outfielder Josh Mead (Tampico, Ill./Bureau Valley) collected a pair of hits and scored a run, but the Loyola (La.) Wolf Pack pitching staff scattered just six hits over nine innings in a 9-3 victory over the Eureka College baseball team, Monday night in Westwego, La.

Mead led off the contest with a single up the middle and put himself in scoring position by advancing to second on an overthrow by the Wolf Pack catcher. Sophomore outfielder Ray Vogel (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) drove in Mead two batters later on a grounder to shortstop giving the Red Devils a quick 1-0 edge.

Junior right-handed pitcher Peter Litwiller (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) made quick work of the Loyola lineup through the first two innings, allowing no base runners. Momentum shifted in the third when Loyola sent ten batters to the plate and ended with a 5-1 swing for the host.

The visitors pushed their second run across of the night in the fourth inning when senior Seth Aydt (Washington, Ill./Washington) grounded home freshman catcher Grant Mullin(Hegewisch, Ill./St. Rita).

The Wolf Pack took a 6-2 lead in the home half of the 4th on a RBI single to shortstop by Spencer Rosenbohm.

Senior Trevor Froehling (Cissna Park, Ill./Cissna Park [Millikin]) platted Eureka's final run of the night in the 8th when he sent a sacrifice fly to left field scoring freshman infielder Jake Miller (Washington, Ill./Washington).

Loyola extended their by tacking on three runs in their final at-bat of the contest.

Litwiller took the loss, allowing five earned runs over 5.0 innings. He struck out six and walked seven.

Eureka will have the day off tomorrow before heading to Hattiesburg, Miss. to close out their spring trip with a twin bill against Will Carey University on Wednesday.
