Eureka Falls at Monmouth, 3-0

MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Eureka volleyball team dropped a 3-0 non-conference contest at Monmouth on Tuesday.

The Red Devils came close to extending it to four sets in a close third, but the Fighting Scots held to clinch the sweep. The final scores were 25-19, 25-5, 25-22.

Brittney Mekelburg (Johnstown, Colo./Roosevelt/St. Andrews) led the maroon and gold with a team-high seven kills on 19 swings while hitting a team-best .211 on the night. Daizjah Shannon (East St. Louis, Ill./Cahokia/Lincoln) followed with five kills.

Hope McGinnes (Mackinaw, Ill./Deer Creek-Mackinaw) recorded 10 assists, and Payton Florine (Galesburg, Ill./Abingdon-Avon/Lincoln) notched a team-high nine digs.

Madison Richards (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) and Halle Gauna (Arcola, Ill./Arcola/Lincoln Trail College) combined for four solo blocks in the match.

It was the Fighting Scots' second win over the Red Devils this season.

For Monmouth, Amanda Dybal racked up a match-high 12 kills and Layne Wright added 10. Paige Bergschneider spread out 28 assists, and Ana Itauro and Zoe Nizzia each had 11 digs.

On Wednesday, the Red Devils (3-21, 2-15 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) will turn around and finish out the season against Blackburn (9-20, 4-11 SLIAC) on the road at 7 p.m.
