Eureka Snags Second Sweep of Season Over Principia

EUREKA – The Eureka volleyball picked up its second sweep over Principia in the past six days at Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena and Convocation Center.

Last weekend, the Panthers came through for a Saturday tri-match and the Red Devils earned their first sweep of the 2021 season, 25-17, 25-17, 25-14.

On Friday, Eureka came out on top 25-16, 25-9, 25-22.

Brooklyn Shell (Evansville, Ind./Mount Vernon) and Corinne DeBoard (Centralia, Ill./Christ Our Rock Lutheran) led the way at the net with a team-high eight kills apiece. Katelin Peters (New Berlin, Ill./New Berlin) followed with six, while Mallory Ward (Bridgeton, Mo./Ladue) and Faith Catour (Orion, Ill./Orion) each had three.

Catour notched 21 assists in the match. Alyvia Gannon (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln) landed a team-high three aces.

The Red Devils were rather dominant in the first two sets, but Principia made them earn it in the final set – a back-and-forth affair that was tied at 20-20. A kill by Peters started a three-point swing for the Red Devils, then once Principia scored on the next, Eureka closed it out by claiming the last three points of the match. Peters and Catour had back to back kills, then DeBoard came up with the game-ending block.

Earlier in the day, Eureka fell in three sets St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action against Spalding. The final score was 25-13, 25-19, 25-15.

Shell tallied a team-high 13 kills and hit a strong .379 in a losing effort. Catour had 20 assists and libero Jordyn Fox (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) contributed 13 digs.

On Tuesday, Eureka will continue SLIAC play when the Red Devils (4-10, 0-2 SLIAC) host Webster for Homecoming week.
