Red Devils Stopped Short in Friday Quad

EUREKA -- The Eureka College volleyball team went to the limit in Friday's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against Iowa Wesleyan at the Reagan Athletic Complex, falling just short in a 25-23, 16-15, 22-25, 25-23, 15-12 setback to the Tigers. EC also dropped the late match to Principia in four games, 26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 25-10.

Heather Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) had a monster game for the hosts in the opener, putting up a 10-kill, 30-assists, 17-dig triple-double. Runa Akagawa (Saitama, Japan/Ritsumeikan Keisho) tacked on a match-high 16 kills while Lexi Dooley (Sutter, Ill./Warsaw H.S.) added 12 and Kary Langan (Lakewood, Ill./Shelbyville H.S.) finished with 10 kills to give the Red Devils four hitters with double-digit kills. 

Katlyn Arrenholz (Delavan, Ill./Delavan H.S.) added 18 assists and McKenna Cleer (Havana, Ill./Havana H.S.) led a 117-dig team effort with a match-high 35.

In the second match of the night against Principia, Robinson had another triple-double with 11 kills, 27 assists and 11 digs. The same group of four players each reached double figures in kills. Akawaga led the way with 16, followed by Dooley (12), Robinson (11) and Langan (10). Akagawa made just two errors on 40 swings to finish the match with a .350 hitting percentage.

Eureka will return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in St. Louis against league foe Fontbonne.
