ELSAH, Ill. – The Eureka cross country and distance team opened its spring indoor season with the Principia Relays on Saturday.

"Overall, the meet went really well," EC cross country and distance coach Chris Robinson said. "We had several strong performances from both the men, and the women. There are a lot of positives we can build on."

The top finish of the day came from freshman newcomer Karissa Heffernan (Metamora, Ill./Metamora), who placed ninth in the women's mile in 6:00.89. She was followed by fellow newcomer, Sarah Kimbro (Peoria, Ill./Metamora), who took 20th in 7:19.70.

On the men's side, junior Javy Garcia (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) also had a strong performance in the mile, coming in 34th in 5:14.93.

The meet also offered some unique distances such as the 300- and 500-meter dash, which the Red Devils used as fun opportunities to work on speed development.

In the women's 500, freshman Isabella Carbajal (Chicago, Ill./Shepard) took 15th in 1:40.37 and sophomore Riley Reuter followed at 17th in 1:51.33.

In the men's 500-meter dash, freshman Hadyen Skaggs (Mansfield, Texas/Mansfield) came in 19th in 1:26.52.

In EC's last race of the day, freshman Odessa Grove (Lewistown, Ill./Lewistown) finished 16th in 15:10.64.

Every runner recorded collegiate personal records in their respective events.

The Red Devils will next compete in the Titan Open at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, Feb. 12.
