DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Eureka women's soccer team fell 8-0 at Defiance to open the Purple and Gold Tournament -- and the 2023 season – on Friday.
The tournament host took a 3-0 lead in the first half and netted five more goals in the second.
Defiance's Haley Hughes and Lexi Coward both recorded hat tricks, while Hallie Webb struck first with an unassisted goal in the second minute of play.
Eureka freshman goalkeeper Gabby Penberthy (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan) notched 12 saves in her first game in net for the maroon and gold. A young Red Devil team saw 10 plays make their collegiate debuts on Friday.
The Red Devils (0-1) will next take on Michigan-Dearborn (0-2) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT. Both teams will be vying for its first win of the fall.
