Wilcox Leads Red Devils with 14 Points in Loss against Principia

EUREKA, IL. – The Eureka women's basketball team fell to Principia at home on Saturday, 74-54.

The Red Devils started strong against an in-form Principia team. The Panthers are currently sitting at 2nd in the conference with an 8-2 SLIAC record, only behind an unbeaten Webster, and having won every game since suffering a loss to Webster on January 6th

The Red Devils put the Panthers to the test though, heading into halftime trailing by a single basket (29-27) following 7 unanswered EC points to close the 2nd period of play. The maroon and gold quickly grabbed hold of the lead in the beginning of the 3rd quarter, but an 18-6 scoring run to close the quarter put Principia back on top and Eureka failed find their way back into the game.

It was a strong showing from the Eureka freshman, as freshman Ashley Wilcox (Hudson, Ill./Normal West) finished with a team-high 14 points and freshman Lainey Moore (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan) followed closely behind with 9 points off the bench.

Josie Ness (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) and Makayla Rosenbery (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) each contributed 8 points to EC's scoring. Ness also led the team in rebounds, while Rosenbery led in steals. Brin Hultz (Quincy, Ill./Travecca Nazarene) chipped in 7 points and picked up 6 boards.

Three Panthers recorded double-digits on the day. Taylor Brown posted a team-high 19 points. Trinniti Matthews and Ariana Williams followed closely behind: Matthews with 16 points and Williams with 13.

On Wednesday, Eureka (4-13, 2-8 SLIAC) are on the road in St. Louis, taking on undefeated Webster University (17-0, 10-0 SLIAC) at 5:30 p.m.
