Red Devils Split at Lyon, 1-7, 12-3

BATESVILLE, Ark – The Eureka softball team claimed its first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the spring on Saturday, taking down Lyon 12-3 in five innings.

The Red Devils came back strong from a 7-1 loss in Game 1 to earn a split on the day.

Game 2: Eureka 12, Lyon 3 (5 inn.)

The Red Devils trailed early on, but they tied the game in the second inning and pulled away with a six-run fourth inning and a three-run fifth that invoked the run rule.

In the circle, Kloe Norris (Manito, Ill./Midwest Central) allowed just two earned runs on five hits and three walks and had three strikeouts in 3 1/3. After that, Claire Wuethrich (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian) took over and turned in 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

At the plate, the Red Devils tallied 12 runs on 14 hits. Nine EC players recorded at least one hit and nine EC players recorded at least one RBI.

Kloe Wheeler (Farmington, Ill./Farmington Central/Heartland) collected a team-high three hits and had two stolen bases, while Macey Whisker (Washington, Ill./Washington/Illinois Central College), Klaire Morris (Billings, Mont./Billings Skyview/Williston State) and Bria Wessel (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) each had two.

Wessel and Gada Bryant (Westville, Ill./Bismark-Henning/Rossville-Alvin/Lincoln) both had RBI doubles, and Alayla Thornton (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria/Trinity International) knocked her first home run as a Red Devil.

Whisker scored an unearned run in the first inning to put EC on the board. Morris scored another in the second and Wessel scored the game-tying run on an RBI groundout by Carmen Howard (Warrensburg, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham).

Two innings later, Eureka plated six runs on seven hits and two Lyon errors.

Kacy Dunlap's (Mount Sterling, Ill./Brown County) RBI single and Thornton's two-run shot in the fifth concluded EC's scoring for the day.

Game 1: Lyon 7, Eureka 1

Lyon pitcher McKenzie Campbell threw a two-hitter, struck out five batters and only conceded one walk in seven innings. The Fighting Scots backed her up at the plate, building a seven-run lead in three innings.

Bryant scored EC's lone run following an error in the sixth inning.

Eureka (9-17) will return to Sweitzer Field for a non-conference doubleheader against Augustana (14-8) on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
