Red Devils Rock Regents, Notch Second Straight Sweep

EUREKA — Three days after taking two from Blackburn in its first home doubleheader of the 2019 campaign, Eureka softball returned to Sweitzer Field and swept Rockford.

The Red Devils tallied a pair of run-rule wins on Tuesday, besting Rockford 9-1 and 11-3 to improve to 4-2 on the year.

In Game 1, Erin Smith (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) recorded her second win of the year by limiting the Regents to one run on five hits and one walk, and fanned three along the way.

The top four hitters of the Red Devils' lineup all had two hits or more. Freshman leadoff hitter Raelyn Payne (Lexington, Ill./Lexington) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and her second home run of the season. Sydney Shubert laid down bunt after bunt en route to a 4-for-4 performance, and Morgan Osborn (Washington, Ill./Washington) went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, including the game-ender in the fifth. Allison Cagley (Fairbury, Ill./Fairbury Central), meanwhile, went 2-for-3.

The team racked up 15 hits to the Regents' four in Game 1 and outhit the visitors 14-5 in Game 2.

Among the highlights of Game 2 were Adrianna Zeman's (La Salle, Ill./La Salle-Peru) first career homer, Morgan Ledbetter's (Hanna City, Ill./Elmwood) first long ball as a Red Devil and a second career win for Sidney Wightman (Waterloo, Ill./Gulbault Catholic) in the circle.

Shubert went 3-for-3, completing a sizzling 7-for-7 day with two singles and a double.
