Finlandia Blanks Red Devils, 6-0

HANCOCK, Mich. — The Eureka men's soccer team was far from home on Sunday afternoon, but couldn't bring back a win as Finlandia defended its home turf in a 6-0 triumph over the visiting Red Devils.

EC and Finlandia were in a stalemate in the first half, with both teams trading blows throughout the first 45 minutes. Eureka recorded four shots-on-goal and Finlandia landed five.

Finlandia broke the deadlock early on in the second half of action. Osvaldo Cruz played a through ball for Akwasi Kwarteng, who was able to direct the ball around EC goalkeeper Moises Aldana (Spring Valley, Ill./Hall) in the 49th minute.

Minutes later, Kwarteng sliced through three Red Devil defenders and put one behind the keeper in an unassisted effort to make it 2-0.

The Lions added a goal in the 57th minute when Marcus Dominguez played a dangerous ball across the six-yard box that eventually found the foot of Brendan Christian, who simply redirected it into the back of the net to make it 3-0.

The Lions made it 4-0 in the 66th as a scramble off a Finlandia corner kick gifted Chelan Gonzalez with a sitter inside the six-yard box.

Bryson Beck and Connor Bates added goals in the 67th and 80th minute, respectively.

Diego Cintora (Watseka, Ill./Watseka ) led the way for the Red Devils in the attacking third with six shots, putting three of them on target.

The Red Devils will round out their non-conference string of matches Friday Sept. 27 when they travel to Lincoln, where they will take on Lincoln Christian at 4:00 p.m.
