Eureka Drops Labor Day Showdown With St. Mary-of-the-Woods, 6-0

EUREKA — After penalty-kick drama resulted in a season-opening victory on Saturday, the Eureka men's soccer team couldn't find the back of the net on Monday.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods (2-0) took down the Red Devils, 6-0, in a non-conference match at McKinzie Field. With the loss, EC fell to 1-1 on the season.

Edson Alvaro scored twice in the second half and four others notched goals to seize the win for the Pomeroys.

The Red Devils allowed two goals in a five minute-span just over 11 minutes into the match, but managed to keep the visitors off the scoreboard for the rest of the half.

In the second half, however, SMW struck in the 51st minute, the 57th minute, the 78th minute and the 88th minute.

The Pomeroys outshot the Red Devils 25-6 while putting 20 shots on frame. The Red Devils only managed to record two shots on goal.

EC's Diego Cintora (Watseka, Ill./Watseka) recorded a team-high four shots with one on-goal.

EC goalkeeper Moises Aldana (Spring Valley, Ill./Hall) made four saves and allowed two goals on six shots-on-goal in the first half. In the second half, fellow goalkeeper Fabian Saldana (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Central Catholic) notched eight saves and conceded four goals on 12 shots-on-goal.

The Red Devils have the rest of the week off from competition to recover and retool. EC will next play at Emmaus on Sept. 10 in an early-season rematch of Saturday's season-opener thriller.
