Red Devils Open SLIAC Play with Road Victory Over Iowa Wesleyan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa -- Eureka College freshman forward Tim Johnson (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) provided his first collegiate goal, and game-winner, in the 58th minute, lifting the Red Devils to a 2-1 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opening victory over Iowa Wesleyan, Wednesday afternoon in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

The Red Devils struck first early in the contest. Freshman midfielder James Bowen (Homer Glen, Ill./Seneca) headed in his first collegiate goal 63 seconds into the contest to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Bowen's goal would provide the only offense of the first half.

Johnson's goal in the second half pushed the Eureka lead to 2-0 and provided the Red Devils with the needed cushion to come out with a key road victory.\

Iowa Wesleyan cut the deficit in half in the 78th minute on a goal by Joshue Nicolas.

The Tigers and Red Devils each took 22 shots, but Eureka made the most of their scoring chances, putting 12 shots on frame. Sophomore Daniel Johnson (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) improved to 2-0 at goal keeper in his first season between the post.

Eureka (2-0-0, 1-0-0 SLIAC) will step away from SLIAC play to travel to Rockford, Ill. for a 1 p.m. contest Saturday against the Regents.
