Red Devils Finish Record-Breaking Season With A Win

Eureka, Ill. -- The Eureka College Red Devils Men's Soccer team concluded their 2015 campaign with a record of 8-11 and 2-7 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after a 3-2 win over the Blackburn Beavers. This breaks the 2009 record of 5-14. 

Both teams came out strong to start the match, but Blackburn took the advantage early in the 4th minute with the goal by Daniel Nguepnang. Eureka battled on, maintaining the possession and maneuvering the ball into the attacking half. Junior Mark Murphy (Morton, Ill./Morton) scored the equalizer in the 39th minute to complete the first half.

The Red Devils took control of the second half with shots taken early and often. Blackburn countered and took their own shots, but it wasn't enough to get past sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Johnson (Eureka, Ill./Eureka). Eureka regained control and scored their second goal of the match to regain the advantage in the 74th minute by Brady Thomas (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./Mt. Pulaski). Thomas continued the push in the 81st minute to take the advantage to 3-1. Blackburn concluded the match with a goal in the 90th minute by Mikey Stephenson. 

D. Johnson collected 6 saves and collected the win, his 8th on the season. Eureka outshot Blackburn 24-17 and 12-8 on frame. Freshman Tim Johnson (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) led the Red Devils with 7 shots and 4 on frame. Thomas collected 6 shots and 4 on frame.

Congratulations to seniors Josh Newell (Morton, Ill./Morton) and Nick Fulop (Lexington, Ill./Lexington) on a tremendous season and careers. Best of luck to you in the future!
